Atomic "Anti-Pump" High Rev Lifters

High RPM Stability | Double Relief Rate Technology

The LIMIT OF Standard Lifters

Standard hydraulic lifters are designed for smooth, gentle operation. When you introduce aggressive camshafts, harsh rev limiters (we know you love it), or high RPM, the valvetrain movement becomes sudden and violent. A standard lifter cannot discharge oil fast enough to keep up with these shocks. Instead, it "pumps up," holding the valve slightly open. This causes loss of compression, severe valve float, and potential piston-to-valve contact.

💡 DID YOU KNOW?

Cam geometry matters. While Atomic and Crow Cams are engineered with smooth ramp rates, many aggressive aftermarket profiles have harsh geometry that "slaps" the rocker arm sending shock to the lifter. Combined with the shock of a hard-cut rev limiter, this forces the lifter to act like a solid strut if it can't bleed oil instantly. Our lifters feature Double the Relief Rate to handle exactly this scenario.

The Atomic Solution

Atomic High Rev "Anti-Pump" Lifters are engineered with modified internal valving that provides a significantly faster bleed-down rate—approximately double that of a standard unit. This allows the lifter to discharge oil instantly under sudden valvetrain shock, maintaining the correct zero-lash tolerance without over-extending (pumping up). It is the ultimate hydraulic solution for engines spinning to 8500rpm+.

High-flow valving prevents pump-up at high RPM.

Stable valve control, even on the limiter.

2. Engineered for Abuse

Whether you are drag racing or drifting, your engine spends its life at the limit. These lifters are built to survive it.

  • Rapid Discharge: The internal metering valve is calibrated to bleed pressure quickly during "lofting" events, ensuring the valve returns to the seat fully.
  • Rev Limiter Safe: Specifically designed to handle the hydraulic shock caused by aggressive ignition-cut rev limiters.
  • Cam Compatibility: While ideal for Atomic cams, they are essential for aftermarket cams with aggressive/harsh lobe profiles to prevent valvetrain separation.

⚠️ Critical Note on Lifter Preload

  • ALL hydraulic lifters — regardless of brand — must be checked for correct preload during installation.
  • Hydraulic lifters rely on oil pressure to maintain zero lash and compensate for heat-related expansion. Excessive preload forces the internal plunger too deep, effectively turning the lifter into a solid unit and eliminating its self-adjusting function. This can result in catastrophic engine damage under load.
  • Excessive preload can cause:
    • Valve train noise (especially cold)
    • Reduced lifter life and premature failure
    • Valve float or loss of power at high RPM
    • Potential valve burning due to incomplete valve closure
  • ➡️ Maximum recommended preload: 0.75mm (0.030")
  • ➡️ See included instructions for correct preload checking method
  • Oil Hygiene: Hydraulic lifters rely on clean oil. Debris from engine failure or poor maintenance will jam the precision check valves. Always install in a clean environment.
  • Break-In: Follow standard camshaft break-in procedures if installing with new cams.
