All Atomic refurbished cranks are inspected and measured for damage, run out, thrust and journal roundness. Cranks come back looking brand new.
Stage 1 - linished/polished, roundness improved, seal track cleaned and smoothed, oil holes chamfered to improve bearing oil flow.
Stage 2 - stage 1 treatment plus heat treating to stress relieve the crank before it is ground and polished. Some cranks will get rejected at this stage because they
Stage 3 - after stage 2 heat treating and finishing we deburr/smooth the crank to remove all rough casting marks that may create stress risers for cracks. The crank is nitrided for even more strength. Nitriding creates an ultra tough skin for the crank which helps it resist wear. Stage 3 cranks are also zero balanced to account for removed material.
Note: because heat treating destresses the crank it sometimes means a crank relaxes enough that after grinding it straight the journals become undersized. Usually it's small enough we can use different bearings but sometimes the crank needs to be rejected.
