Why You Should Upgrade Your Oil Pump Gears

The factory Ford Barra oil pump gears are made from sintered iron—a process of compressing metal powder. While fine for a stock commuter car, this material is brittle and notoriously weak under shock loading. High RPM limiters, aggressive launch control, and torsional crank harmonics can shatter these gears instantly, causing immediate loss of oil pressure and catastrophic engine failure.

"Limiter Bashing" is the #1 killer of oil pumps. The sudden harmonic shock sent through the crankshaft when hitting a hard rev limiter acts like a hammer blow to the oil pump gears. Billet gears absorb this shock; factory sintered gears shatter like glass.

Our gears are precision CNC machined from 4340 Billet Steel, offering vastly superior tensile strength and ductility compared to the OEM sintered part. But we didn't stop there—we now Gas Nitride every gear set. This advanced heat treatment penetrates the surface to increase hardness and wear resistance while maintaining a tough, shock-resistant core.

2. Precision Gerotor Design

Strength means nothing without pressure. Our gears are machined to exact gerotor profiles to ensure consistent volumetric efficiency.

  • Gas Nitriding: Provides a hard, low-friction surface finish that resists scoring and wear against the housing, extending the life of the pump.
  • Precision Tolerances: Machined to strict tolerances to ensure proper inner-to-outer gear clearance, maximizing oil pressure at hot idle.
  • Direct Replacement: Designed to fit directly into your existing factory oil pump housing (housing condition must be verified).

⚠️ Critical Install Notes

  • Check Housing Clearance: You MUST measure the clearance between the new gears and your oil pump housing. Worn housings will result in low oil pressure.
  • Priming is Essential: Never start a fresh engine without priming the oil pump first. Pack the pump with petroleum jelly (Vaseline) or assembly lube to ensure it creates suction immediately on startup.
  • Inspection: Always inspect the backing plate for wear. We recommend using our Billet Steel Backing Plate for the ultimate setup.
