Why Dowel Your Crank?

Tired of loose flexplates and sheared crank bolts? In high-torque Barra builds, the factory friction washer and bolts often aren't enough to hold the flexplate stationary against the crank flange. The long stroke of the Barra makes big power but also shakes the flex plate at a very high frequency trying to break it loose. Installing dowels helps the flexplate and bolts resist this shaking caused by the engine harmonics and other powertrain dynamics.

The dowelling jig allows in-car drilling. Until now, dowelling a crank usually meant pulling the engine out. The Atomic Dowelling Jig bolts directly to the rear crank flange, allowing you to precision-drill dowel holes with the engine still in the car. It's a game-changer for workshop efficiency and DIY budgets.

We use a Hardened Steel Jig with a Super-Hardened Pilot Sleeve to guide our Titanium-coated bits through the tough Barra crank steel. ⚠️ Usage Instructions

  • Step 1: Place Flexplate/flywheel on the crank and bolt jig to it
  • Step 2: Insert sleeve and drill pilot hole (6mm).
  • Step 3: Remove sleeve and step up drill sizes (9.8mm first, then 25/64" to finish).
  • Step 4: Remove jig, clean thoroughly, and tap in dowels. Dowels should require hammer to install but not excessive force. 
  • Cleanliness: Ensure all metal swarf is carefully cleaned from the crank area to prevent engine damage.
  • Accuracy and drilling: This kit has the ability to deliver a machine shop level of precision and tolerance dozens of times. The success and effectiveness of the dowels comes down to how well you are able to drill the holes. Please use all tools available to drill the holes as straight and stable as possible. Do not rush and please read the guide carefully.
