A NEW GENERATION OF Timing GEAR for 200HP-2000+hp Barra Engines
The Problem
The factory Barra timing system was never designed for high RPM, big cams, or heavy valve springs. Under load, stock chains stretch, plastic guides shatter, and standard crank sprockets wear out. The result? Catastrophic engine failure.
Just upgrading valve springs alone will add ~40% increase in load on the timing chain compared to standard. More aggressive, higher lift cams add more yet again. The effect is amplified at higher RPM.
The Atomic Solution
A fully engineered, race-proven timing solution. We don't just replace parts; we upgrade the entire architecture. Using the Atomic precision machined billet steel guides the Atomic heavy-duty chain (nearly 2x factory strength), Atomic Street chain tensioner, heat treated and hardened Atomic Billet Crank Sprocket and other high quality precision engineer components this kit is built to survive everything from a stock rebuild to a 2500hp monster without sacrificing NVH or reliability. From September 2026 Atomic Street tensioners are used exclusively in our kits as they have proven to be the most reliable and durable option available since discontinuation of the Ford factory tensioners. Ford factory tensioner were used in Atomic kits until around June 2026.

2. The "Unbreakable" Guide
The factory timing chain guide on the tensioner side is made from cast iron and fits loosely on the pivot bolt compared to modern performance engines. We solved it by manufacturing our own tight tolerance guide from Billet Steel.
- Reprofiled Tip: We redesigned the tip geometry to prevent the common plastic failure found in other designs
- Heat Treated: Case-hardened for extreme durability and wear resistance against the tensioner piston
-
High clearance from specially chamfered shoulder to avoid contact with timing cover and guide breakage
- Chromoly Pivot: Includes a Billet Chromoly pivot bolt with a nyloc nut to ensure it never backs out under vibration. The play between the factory pivot and guide has been significantly reduced to avoid misalignment and unwanted guide movement
3. HD Chain & Billet Sprocket
Strength where it counts. Our components are refined to handle the stress of high-lift cams and stiff valve springs.
- Heavy Duty Chain: Approximately 2x the strength of the factory chain
- Billet Crank Sprocket: Case-hardened heat-treated steel with tighter manufacturing tolerances to reduce vibration and wear from play and misalignment
- High Polish Chain Links: The smoothest, high quality finish chains we've been able to find. This means less noise, less wear, less vibration through the whole system and engine.

⚠️ Important Notes
- Head Gasket Thickness: This kit is designed for head gaskets 1.0mm thick. Using thicker gaskets may over-tension the chain or affect tensioner operation. Contact Atomic for questions or concerns. 1.8mm gaskets are known to make installation and good operation very difficult due to chain tightness. Whilst the Atomic Street tensioner is better able to handle this, the issue may still occur on some engines.
- Installation: Correct timing is critical. Failure to follow the included instructions can lead to severe engine damage. DO NOT MANUALLY ADD TENSION TO THE GUIDE!
- Timing cover clearance is a known issue on these engines. You must USE DOWELS ON THE TIMING COVER as per factory assembly. Without dowels your timing chain guide will likely hit the cover and snap. It is still possible for the guide to contact the cover even with the dowels as every casting is slightly different. We recommend using blutac to confirm guide to cover clearance or at least 2mm. Check clearance immediately after installing the tensioner, before the engine is run and the tensioner extends due to oil pressure.
- Break-In: Upon first start, it may take a few minutes for the hydraulic tensioner to fully take up slack. To speed up the process, bring engine RPM slowly to 4000rpm 2 or 3 times. Like 3 big breathes - 5s RPM up, 5s RPM down x3.

Failures are VERY rare on these parts and manufacturing defects are lower than 1 in 1000 on the sprocket, pivot, guide and chain we produce. More often than not, harsh tunes, aggressive limiters, drivetrain problems like high line pressure, harsh shifts, clunky diffs, etc. introduce problems into the system that breaks parts. If you have a parts failure immediately after installation it is likely an installation error or manufacturing defect. Contact Atomic. If the failure occurs after installing other powertrain or engine management upgrades, then they have likely caused additional stress beyond these components' designed operating range. We cannot warranty our products against operation outside of healthy functioning engines or engines with reasonably expected issues.
